ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AF)

WHAT IS ATRIAL FIBRILLATION?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm condition where the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat irregularly and often faster than normal.

AF can be persistent or intermittent and experiences vary widely. Some people notice clear symptoms, while others are diagnosed incidentally and feel very little day to day.

WHY IT MATTERS?

Atrial fibrillation can affect how efficiently the heart fills and pumps blood, which may influence physical capacity and confidence with activity.

People living with AF may experience:

  • Reduced exercise tolerance or early fatigue

  • Shortness of breath during exertion

  • Palpitations or awareness of heart rhythm

  • Reduced confidence with physical activity

Once diagnosed and medically cleared, remaining active can support cardiovascular health, symptom management and overall quality of life.

OUR SUPPORT & EXERCISE APPROACH

Exercise Physiology support focuses on helping people with atrial fibrillation stay active safely and confidently, alongside their medical care.

This includes:

  • Individually prescribed exercise that respects AF history, symptoms and medical guidance

  • Support with understanding safe exercise intensity, pacing and recovery

  • Gradual progression of aerobic and resistance exercise to support cardiovascular fitness

  • Strategies to build confidence with movement and reduce fear of exertion

  • Education around lifestyle strategies that support heart health

  • Ongoing review and refinement of exercise programs as symptoms, fitness or treatment plans change

  • A collaborative approach with your healthcare team to ensure exercise and lifestyle strategies align with your broader care plan.

  • 1:1 Exercise Physiology & Clinical Pilates or small group classes.
