Can Exercise Lower Blood Pressure? What the Research Shows

High blood pressure is one of the most common health concerns in Australia — and one of the most manageable. If your GP has flagged your blood pressure, or you've noticed it creeping up on a home monitor, it's natural to wonder what you can do about it beyond medication.

The answer, backed by a growing body of research, is quite a lot.

What is high blood pressure?

Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps. It's measured in two numbers — systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) and diastolic (the pressure when it rests between beats). A reading around 120/80mmHg is generally considered healthy.

Persistently elevated blood pressure — typically above 130/80mmHg — is known as hypertension. It often has no noticeable symptoms, which is why it's sometimes called the "silent" condition. Over time, if left unaddressed, it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney damage.

So, can exercise actually lower blood pressure?

Yes — and the evidence is strong.

Research consistently shows that regular aerobic exercise can reduce systolic blood pressure by approximately 5–8 mmHg, and diastolic blood pressure by 3–5 mmHg. To put that in perspective, some blood pressure medications produce reductions in a similar range.

This doesn't mean exercise replaces medication — for many people, both are part of the picture. But it does mean that the right exercise program can make a meaningful, measurable difference to your blood pressure numbers.

What types of exercise are most effective?

Both aerobic and resistance exercise have been shown to support blood pressure reduction, and a combination of the two tends to produce the best results.

Aerobic exercise — activities that raise your heart rate sustainably, such as walking, cycling, swimming or rowing — is well supported by the evidence for lowering blood pressure. Moderate intensity is generally recommended, meaning you're working hard enough to notice but still able to hold a conversation.

Resistance training — lifting weights, using resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises — also plays a role. Research has shown that isometric exercises in particular, such as wall sits and planks have a specific benefit for blood pressure reduction.

The key is consistency. Short bursts of intense exercise here and there are far less effective than regular, consistent movement done week after week.

How much exercise do you need?

Australian guidelines recommend at least 150–300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, plus muscle-strengthening exercise at least twice weekly. For blood pressure specifically, even the lower end of this range can produce meaningful improvements.

The most important step is moving from doing nothing to doing something consistently — and then building gradually from there.

What to consider before you start

If your blood pressure is elevated, it's worth having a conversation with your GP before significantly increasing your exercise intensity. For most people, moderate exercise is safe and beneficial — but understanding your individual situation, any medications you're taking and how your body responds to exercise is important.

Lifestyle factors like diet, stress management and sleep also play a role in blood pressure management — and are worth discussing with your GP or relevant health professional alongside your exercise program. That said, exercise is one of the most powerful and modifiable levers available, and one that's often underutilised.
